I am writing to you as a constituent, occupational therapist, and member of Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA), the professional association and peak representative body for occupational therapists in Australia.

Occupational therapy is a vital component of Australia's healthcare system. With over 31,000 registered occupational therapists nationwide, we represent one of the largest allied health workforces. Our profession is instrumental in enabling individuals to participate in meaningful work and social activities, working across sectors such as primary care, aged care, disability, mental health, and veteran care. Investment in occupational therapy delivers substantial benefits to health and disability systems and the lives of Australians.

As we approach the 2025 Federal Election, I urge you to take decisive action to address the significant challenges impacting occupational therapists and the Australians they support. OTA’s 2025 Federal Election Statement outlines critical calls to action designed to address workforce shortages, improve access to occupational therapy services, and ensure sustainable funding for key programs in mental health, disability, aged care, primary care, and veterans’ services.

As my local candidate, I ask that you champion the following four priorities as part of your election commitments:

Deliver a quality sustainable National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – Commit to including OTA and occupational therapists in the design and delivery of new support needs assessment models and protect participant access to specialised occupational therapy assessments.

Transitional disability support - Ensure transitional funding arrangements for NDIS participants who are reassessed as ineligible for NDIS until foundational supports are in place.

Protect older Australians - Develop mandatory care planning guidelines for home and residential aged care to ensure early identification of needs and ensure funded access to occupational therapy services.

Support veterans - Increase Department of Veteran Affairs fee rates for occupational therapy, as recommended by the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran’s Suicide, to reflect the true cost of service and address provider shortfalls.
